Gluten Free Matrimonial Squares (Date Squares)

Gluten Free Matrimonial SquaresGrowing up I loved (and still do) matrimonial squares.  Having relocated to the United States from Canada, every once in awhile I use Canadian terms to the bewildered looks of people around me (Americans).  I’m sure you’ve heard of many of these:  chesterfield (sofa/couch), toque (winter hat with no brim), garburator (garbage disposal), parkade (multi level parking garage)….the list goes on.  Hence matrimonial squares or date squares…so I looked this one up.

Matrimonial squares is the name commonly used in Western Canada for date squares.  Some people feel it is called matrimonial squares because of the two separate layers brought together by dates which symbolizes two people courting and solidifying the relationship in marriage.  Others feel that the smooth and rough textures of the date squares represent the easy and difficult times of a marriage.  Some believe that it was individually wrapped, handed out at weddings, and then single ladies would place it under their pillow and dream about their future husband.

Whatever the origin, and whatever the name you would like to call this dessert, it is delicious!


  • 1/2 cup sweet sorghum flour
  • 3/4 cup brown rice flour
  • 1/2 cup teff flour
  • 1  1/2 cups gluten free oatmeal
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup organic brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter (yup I know a lot)


Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Boil the pitted dates, water and sugar for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Crush dates while stirring. Put aside.

Whisk flours and soda together in a bowl. Stir in brown sugar and oatmeal. Cut butter into the flour until it is all together in a crumble consistency.

Spread half of flour mixture in bottom of greased 9 X 13 pan. Press down lightly. Cover with date mixture. Sprinkle remainder on top. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes or until slightly brown.

Cut before completely cool.
